Netflix Removes Casting Option for Most TVs and Smart Devices
- This month, Netflix removed the ability to cast from mobile devices to most TVs and TV-streaming devices, confirming the change only via an updated Netflix Help Center page.
- Because the feature was little used, Netflix told WIRED it ended mobile playback control to prioritize its native TV app for better UI, data, and ad management.
- Legacy Chromecasts and Google Cast–compatible TVs can still cast, but this requires ad-free Netflix plans starting at $17.99, while the $7.99 ad-supported basic plan cannot cast.
- Subscribers now must log into TV apps or connect devices by HDMI to watch, causing friction for travelers and prompting anger on Reddit and other online forums over the removal without warning.
- The move aligns with Netflix's paid‑sharing initiative launched in 2023 and follows AirPlay removal, April 2019, amid Q1 2024 subscriber gains of more than 9 million.
