NetApp unveils fastest file system on the planet with great raft of other announcements
The system is built to exceed 100 TB/sec and support high utilization of hundreds of thousands of GPUs for AI workloads.
- NetApp launched the Novus file system, delivering 100 TB/sec of throughput designed to maximize GPU utilization for large-scale AI factories and enterprise deployments.
- Traditional storage architectures cause GPU utilization to drop below 30 percent when data pipelines cannot keep compute resources fed. Novus separates metadata from the data path to enable independent scaling of performance, capacity, and concurrency.
- NetApp collaborated with Supermicro to deliver Novus Data Director software running on qualified server infrastructure with ONTAP enterprise data services on AFF A90 systems. The architecture supports hundreds of thousands of GPUs while preserving existing data management features.
- Omdia Chief Analyst Tony Palmer noted the system demonstrates "near-linear performance scaling" across clusters, positioning NetApp to compete with high-performance storage providers like WEKA and VAST Data. Modeling projects the architecture can scale to zettascale deployments for data-hungry AI workloads.
- NetApp also introduced Keystone Sovereign with regional data controls for European customers and announced deepened integrations for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Strategic acquisitions like Peak:AIO aim to enable the company's installed base to adopt AI functionality without leaving the ONTAP environment.
