Nepal death toll rises to 1050 as rescues continue

Specialized teams are using helicopters and excavators as Nepal reports 4,000 missing and more than 11,000 rescued.

  • The death toll in Nepal's floods rose to 1,050, with about 4,000 people still missing, including 583 foreigners and 42 Australians, as rescuers deploy heavy machinery to reach those trapped nearly a week after the disaster.
  • A glacier collapse on August 26 sent a deluge of ice, rock, and mud through the border region with China, leaving at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris according to the United Nations Development Program.
  • Nepal's disaster management authority reported at least 639 people remain stranded in devastated hydropower stations; mountain guide Asish Gurung said, "We need machines like bulldozers and excavators," noting about 500 trapped at Trishuli Hydro Power.
  • International teams from China, India, and South Korea are supporting operations as Prime Minister Balendra Shah reported more than 11,000 people rescued and aid worth more than $US42 million flowed into the country.
  • Shah said the disaster signalled growing risks the Himalayan region faces from warming climate, stating, "The time has come for us to strongly raise before the international community the disasters we are experiencing as a consequence of climate change.
