Chopra Ends Season Early After Ligament Tear
The two-time Olympic medallist will miss the Diamond League Final and the Asian Games after tearing a ligament in training, he said.
- On Saturday, Neeraj Chopra announced he will end his 2026 season after sustaining an ankle ligament tear during training. The two-time Olympic medallist confirmed the decision via Instagram post following medical consultation.
- The injury occurred just as the Indian javelin star gained momentum, having recently recorded a Season Best throw of 88.05m at the Lausanne Diamond League. Chopra finished second, falling nine centimetres short of Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage.
- Chopra will now miss the Diamond League Final in Brussels, for which he had qualified by securing seventh place with 12 points, alongside the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Both competitions represent major opportunities lost this season.
- His absence marks a major setback for India's athletics contingent, removing the star javelin thrower from the Asian Games and all remaining 2026 competitions. Chopra had been expected to lead India's medal charge at the Games.
- Focused now on recovery, the former World champion aims to return stronger after a mixed 2026 campaign. Chopra won Olympic gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and silver at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
