Nearly a decade after he left for a work trip, his remains were identified in a Minnesota shed
Forensic genealogy and DNA databases linked the remains to a New York man, ending an eight-year unidentified case, officials said.
In 2022, investigators identified the body of 48-year-old James Everett, discovered in a Rosemount, Minnesota, railroad utility shed in 2014.
Everett left his New York state home for a work trip in September 2013 and never returned, leaving loved ones to search for nearly a decade.
Working with Parabon Nanolabs and the DNA Doe Project, investigators submitted DNA to the Combined DNA Index System, chasing nearly 600 leads before forensic genealogy identified him.
Authorities contacted his wife, Patricia Everett, who said, "Please be assured that we, especially me, never gave up searching." She expressed gratitude for investigators.
Hennepin County Medical Examiner official Shawn Wilson noted the case "is not ours to tell," as authorities confirmed no foul play was suspected in his death.
