NATO allies debate military action to break Iran’s Strait of Hormuz blockade

  • NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that NATO allies are coordinating to find the best way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and agree it must be reopened.
  • Since last month, Iran's effective shutdown of the strait after the United States and Israel began a war has pushed global oil prices up more than 40%.
  • US President Donald Trump urged other powers to send warships to escort convoys, while British military experts work with the US and a team was sent to US Central Command.
  • NATO publicly condemned Iran's attacks and discussed the situation with France, Germany, Italy, and Poland, with NATO's Gulf partners participating in the coordination.
  • Mr Carns warned reopening must be a multinational solution and defence sources said few nations would risk placing warships amid threats; in 1987, escorts required 30 warships but the situation is now more complex.
