Nationwide May Day Protests Expected to Pick up Mantle of 'No Kings'
More than 500 unions, student groups and community organizations are joining the boycott, and Sunrise Movement says over 100,000 students may miss school.
- On Friday, thousands of demonstrators participated in "May Day Strong" protests nationwide, calling for boycotts of work, school, and shopping to oppose President Donald Trump's policies.
- Unlike Labor Day in September, May 1 is traditionally reserved for protest, with the 3 million-member National Education Association leading this year's organizing effort.
- In North Carolina, educators rallied for the "Kids Over Corporations" campaign demanding public school investment, while the Sunrise Movement reported more than 100,000 students planned to strike.
- North Carolina State Sen. Amy Galey, a Republican, argued school closures negatively impact students, while some Chinatown merchants remained open, citing inability to afford closure.
- Following anti-Trump protests under the "No Kings" banner that drew millions earlier this year, the administration countered by declaring May 1 "Loyalty Day," a tradition dating to Dwight Eisenhower.
