Millions Could Get £100 as Nationwide Tops Switching Charts Again
Nationwide gained more than 64,000 customers as UK switching topped 319,000, with its £100 Fairer Share payment driving demand.
Nationwide Building Society secured over 64,000 net customer gains in the first quarter of 2026, maintaining its position as the UK's most switched-to provider, largely driven by its £100 "Fairer Share" payment.
Bank switching surged in the first three months of 2026, with more than 319,000 switches recorded—a 43% increase compared to the same period last year as consumers hunt for better value.
While Nationwide grew, several major rivals saw significant outflows: Halifax lost over 25,000 customers, Santander dropped nearly 24,000, and HSBC saw losses of more than 20,000.
Around 90% of users report satisfaction with the switching process, while Moneyfacts analyst Rachel Springall noted that cost-of-living pressures are pushing consumers to ditch accounts for better deals.
Tom Riley from Nationwide Building Society explained the society's advantage: "Because we don't have shareholders, we can give more back to our members." The building society has paid the bonus for three years running.
