National park maintenance work sidelined as Trump’s Freedom 250 takes precedence
About 1,500 maintenance projects worth more than $400 million were moved down the list as White House work took priority, officials said.
President Donald Trump's initiative preparing for the 250th anniversary has diverted resources toward Washington park projects, sidelining 1,500 maintenance tasks nationwide across more than 200 sites.
Tasked with managing a repair backlog that doubled to more than $24 billion over the last decade, the National Park Service faces competing demands as Congress pushed to address maintenance needs.
The 1,500 low priority projects have a combined cost estimate of more than $400 million, while the National Park Service obligated about $140 million in Washington this year, including $80 million in White House priorities.
Maine Independent Sen. Angus King warned these aesthetic pursuits could lead to "the deterioration of America's gems," while the Interior Department's contracting workforce dropped more than 20% during the administration's term.
Interior spokesperson Katie Martin said the administration is eyeing different revenue sources including endowments and park pass sales; however, officials noted the 1,500 low priority projects are expected to go undone without workarounds.
