Nashville International Airport to change its name to Dolly Parton International Airport
The change would cost $8 million to $10 million and keep the BNA code while the board removes a rule limiting airport names.
- On Friday, The Metro Nashville Airport Authority Board will vote on a resolution to rename Nashville International Airport as Dolly Parton International Airport, with all seven members expected to approve unanimously.
- Driven by a public petition with more than 175,000 signatures, the board will also move to eliminate a rule requiring that airport properties be named only for people dead for at least two years.
- Funding for the $8 million to $10 million project will come from Metro, State, and airport resources, while the airport will retain its BNA designation to honor the airport's founder.
- Once the vote is confirmed, the administrative process with the FAA will begin, with officials estimating the full transition will take six months to a year before the name becomes official.
- Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor Freddie have publicly supported the renaming, while Parton's family and foundation also appear to be in agreement with the effort.
