NASA’s Roman Telescope Set to Launch on Cosmic Mapping Mission
The $4 billion observatory will survey the sky with a field of view more than 100 times larger than Hubble's, NASA said.
- NASA is preparing to launch the Roman Space Telescope on Sunday from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, embarking on a multi-year mission to create an unprecedented map of the cosmos.
- Developed over a decade at a cost of $4 billion, the observatory is named after pioneering U.S. astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, who became known as the "Mother of Hubble," another of NASA's flagship telescopes.
- With a field of view more than 100 times larger than Hubble's, the telescope will generate about 1.3 terabytes of data daily while using infrared vision to detect light from billions of years ago.
- Researchers aim to illuminate dark matter and dark energy, which together comprise about 95 per cent of the universe, using Roman's vantage point 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.
- Roman's observations will complement the European Space Agency's Euclid probe and the Rubin Observatory in Chile, as project scientist Julie McEnery noted that recent research suggests current expansion models may be wrong.
