Nairobi Submits Official Bid to Host the 2029 World Athletics Championships
Kenya’s government-backed bid seeks to bring the senior championships to Africa for the first time, with World Athletics to decide among four cities.
On Monday, August 10, 2026, Nairobi officially submitted its application to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, seeking to become the first African city to stage the sport's flagship event.
Kenya's government committed full support to the proposal, ensuring the necessary infrastructure, security, and organizational framework required to host a world-class global showpiece.
Nairobi leverages extensive hosting experience, having previously staged the 2017 World Under-18 Championships, the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, and the 2010 African Athletics Championships, alongside annual World Athletics Gold Label events like the Kip Keino Classic.
The Kenyan capital faces stiff competition from London, Rome, and Munich for the 2029 hosting rights, as these established cities also submitted formal applications for the selection process.
World Athletics will announce the winning host city next month, following the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, determining if the global event makes its African debut.
