N39bn cocaine seizure: NDLEA ordered to produce KC Luxury in court
The judge said the agency must respond within five days as KC Luxury challenges detention over a 184.5kg cocaine seizure valued at about N39 billion.
- On Thursday, Justice Friday Ogazi ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to produce Afolabi Kazeem Michael in court and respond within five days to his lawsuit challenging his detention.
- The NDLEA arrested Kazeem on August 13 at the Lagos airport, linking him to a 184.5kg cocaine seizure at a DHL facility. NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa identified the businessman as the alleged "arrowhead" of an international trafficking network.
- Previously, Judge Akintayo Aluko granted the agency a 30-day detention extension on August 20. Kazeem, through counsel A. Labi-Lawal, challenges this custody as unconstitutional under the 1999 Constitution, claiming 14 days in detention without charge.
- Kazeem alleges his Fundamental Rights were violated when operatives searched his Banana Island residence and circulated custody photographs. He seeks damages, asserting these actions portrayed him as a criminal before trial.
- The court adjourned the investigation report until September 17. The judge ordered that all court processes, including the application and enrolled order, be served on the NDLEA within four working days.
