Myanmar's war-torn Rakhine faces a hunger catastrophe, aid groups say

Conflict, military blockades, and funding cuts have caused acute malnutrition to rise nearly tenfold in Rakhine, severely affecting over 100,000 children and displaced Rohingya, UN agencies report.

  • Last month at a high-level UN meeting, the United Nations World Food Programme warned Rakhine state faces an alarming hunger crisis, while the United States and Britain pledged US$96 million for Bangladesh refugee camps housing over a million Rohingya.
  • The military's seizure of power triggered a nationwide uprising that reignited fighting between Myanmar's ruling military junta and the Arakan Army, while the junta pressured researchers and aid workers last year.
  • More than 100,000 children in Rakhine suffer acute malnutrition, with less than 2 percent accessing treatment, and numbers nearly tenfold higher between September 2023 and August this year, aid workers reported.
  • Funding cuts have forced aid agencies to limit WFP food programs, and Michael Dunford said `This is obviously contributing to the spike in hunger that we are seeing`.
  • Survivors describe eating leaves and roots before fleeing, the International Rescue Committee said arrivals last month faced severe malnutrition, and refugee Mohammed Idris said, `There was hardly any food to eat. Most days, we had only one meal`.
