Myanmar calls on countries to take back citizens held in crackdown on scam centers
Myanmar's military government detained 13,272 foreign nationals since January during raids on scam centers, with 1,655 still held amid deportation challenges, officials said.
- On Sunday, Myanmar's military regime appealed for countries to take back foreigners detained in a crackdown on scam centres in Kayin state near Myawaddy.
- The military government says the crackdown began in early September after months of raids on online scam and illegal gambling operations including KK Park and Shwe Kokko.
- At a briefing, authorities disclosed the scale of detentions and holding sites, reporting 13,272 foreigners from 47 countries detained since January with 1,655 still in detention; Chinese nationals number more than 500, held in sports facilities and Kayin Border Guard Force buildings.
- Min Thu Kyaw said authorities were struggling to cope and asked the international community to `come and call them quickly` as state-run MRTV television recently showed scam-centre demolitions with explosives and bulldozers.
- The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime estimates scam centers generate just under $40 billion annually, while ethnic Karen militias, including the Border Guard Force and Karen National Union, influence Myawaddy's security.
