Railways Cancel Tender for 238 AC Locals, Will Manufacture in Own Workshops
Railways says parallel production will cut the wait for Mumbai’s 238 AC local rakes, with the first train now expected by 2027, officials said.
Railways will manufacture 238 additional AC local rakes for Mumbai simultaneously at three production units to shorten delivery timelines for commuters.
Under the earlier timeline, the first rake was expected by 2030 with full fleet completion by 2034; the revised plan accelerates delivery to 2027 for the first rake and 2030 for all 238.
Integral Coach Factory , Chennai Rail Coach Factory , and Kapurthala Modern Coach Factory will simultaneously manufacture the rakes across India's three designated railway production units.
Vilas S Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director of the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation , stated the strategy coordinates new AC rakes with additional rail lines and capacity projects.
A Rs 22,000 crore investment supports capacity expansion projects including yard remodeling and 15-coach train platforms, aiming to make Mumbai's suburban system safer, more comfortable, and efficient.
