Multiple people injured in reported explosion at high-rise building in downtown Houston near Daikin Park
Six construction workers suffered burns and lacerations after a natural gas line exploded in the boiler room of a 17-story hotel under construction, officials said.
- On October 2, an explosion shortly after 11 a.m. at 1319 Texas Avenue blew out windows and sparked a fast-moving fire, injuring at least six construction workers.
- HFD said the blast involved a natural gas line and a pressure issue with a bank of tankless water heaters on the 17th and 18th floors, and HAZMAT was added as a precaution while investigators examine the boiler room.
- About 11:08 a.m., crews were dispatched and ambulances arrived, with Brent Taylor, HFD spokesperson, saying `It appears to be an explosion up on one of the top floors of the building` and the area roped off.
- Streets near the site were closed and authorities urged motorists to avoid the area, affecting Texas, Caroline, San Jacinto and Austin streets and delaying the 275-room development's opening for months.
- Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and arson investigators are working to determine the cause, with Jeffrey noting `And this hotel broke ground in 2023, so they were kind of thinking that they had kind of perfect timing for not only the World Cup but also the Republican National Convention that's coming as well`.
