Rays Defeat Cubs in Return to Tropicana Field
A sellout crowd of 25,114 saw Cedric Mullins, Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero homer in Tampa Bay’s first home win for its new owners.
On Monday, the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-4, marking their triumphant return to Tropicana Field after 561 days away.
Hurricane Milton shredded the original stadium roof in October 2024, forcing the Rays to spend the 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field while nearly $60 million in repairs were completed.
Cedric Mullins, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero homered before a sellout crowd of 25,114, while the team debuted the renovated Cownose Clubhouse housing stingrays that survived the hurricane.
Manager Kevin Cash called the return an "important day," while the victory marked the first home win for the ownership group led by Patrick Zalupski, who purchased the team for $1.7 billion last year.
Although the Rays remain under lease at the Trop through at least the 2028 season, the ownership group is pursuing a new ballpark near Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
