Moving hostage situation: man jailed after horror stabbing attack on train
Judge Roy Ellis sentenced Darryl Luke Smith to six years in jail after a phone dispute on a CountryLink train turned violent, trapping 10 passengers.
In Newcastle District Court on Monday, Judge Roy Ellis sentenced Darryl Luke Smith to six years in jail for a November 2024 hostage incident aboard a train, imposing a three-year non-parole period.
A phone dispute between Smith and his partner aboard The CountryLink service from Broadmeadow to Moree on November 23, 2024, escalated into violence when the woman asked for her phone back and Smith refused to return it.
Trapping 10 passengers in the carriage, Smith threatened to kill his partner, yelling "Take one step closer and I will kill her." Police disarmed him using a Taser and capsicum spray.
Judge Ellis condemned the attack as domestic violence, stating: "She should be the person you look after the most, not the person you should be violent with." His finding emphasized the breach of trust in intimate relationships.
After pleading guilty in May to charges including recklessly wounding his partner, Smith remains in custody. Support for those affected by domestic violence is available through local services.
