Mountain lion spotted in San Francisco's Outer Sunset District
Officials told residents to stay indoors and keep dogs leashed as animal control worked to safely relocate the juvenile mountain lion.
- On Friday morning, San Francisco Animal Care and Control officers tranquilized and captured a mountain lion in the Outer Sunset neighborhood near 44th Avenue and Ulloa Street, ending an hours-long standoff.
- The capture follows a mountain lion spotted near the Golden Gate Park panhandle earlier this month and another observed in a tree near Fell and Baker streets less than two weeks prior.
- Resident Alex Grant told KTVU, "We woke up at like 7:30, there were like 50 crows on the power line, crowing and making a huge ruckus," before police arrived; expert John Morgan of the Santa Cruz-based Puma Project identified the animal as a juvenile male typical of those seeking territory.
- The California Department of Fish and Wildlife released the animal into the wild later Friday without disclosing the location, as city officials advised residents to "slowly back away" and call Animal Care and Control at 415-554-9400 or 911.
- Morgan explained the juvenile was likely dispersing from its mother at about one-and-a-half to two years of age, while officials instructed people to "make yourself big" if approached, though human attacks remain very rare despite widespread publicity.
