Minnesota Soldier Missing Since WWII Buried with Honors

The Army identified his remains after decades of uncertainty, allowing family and friends to honor him with a burial and flag ceremony.

  • On Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, Pvt. Duane Payne was buried with honors at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, more than 80 years after he was listed as missing in action during World War II.
  • Payne went missing in action on Oct. 9, 1944, during combat operations in Aachen, Germany, before local villagers moved his remains to the Netherlands American Cemetery, where he was identified as X36.
  • Annette Brieger, Payne's granddaughter, spent nearly 40 years researching her grandfather's background before his remains were transferred to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base in 2025 for identification.
  • The Minnesota Patriot Guard escorted Payne to the cemetery, where Reverend Greg Leslie presided over the ceremony and three members of the Army National Guard Honor Guard folded the American flag for the family.
  • Brieger expressed gratitude for the support, saying, "It really touched our hearts," and recognized the American Legion and the VFW for their contributions to honoring her grandfather.
