Mother, 18, arrested after giving away baby to stranger at bus stop, police say

On Sunday night in downtown San Antonio, 18-year-old Karla Ibarra approached Jennifer Benavides at a bus stop and handed her infant son to the stranger, saying, "Well, do you want him? I'm going to give him to somebody."
Ibarra presented the child's birth certificate, Medicaid card, and Social Security card to Benavides, who realized the situation was serious and sought help from a nearby friend.
When Ibarra called an Uber and left the infant at the friend's home, San Antonio Police were contacted and she was arrested after returning to the residence.
Ibarra is charged with abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return; Child Protective Services placed the boy with relatives following her arrest.
Texas' Baby Moses Law allows parents to anonymously surrender unharmed newborns 60 days old or younger at fire stations, EMS stations, or hospitals without criminal penalties. Benavides said she was "upsetting" someone would abandon a child "with even all the resources that we have out there.
