St John Ambulance Aims to Teach 500,000 Life-Saving First Aid in September
The charity says 27% in the South East do not know choking can turn life-threatening within minutes as it targets 500,000 people with free lessons.
St John Ambulance launched its annual Save a Life September campaign this week, aiming to teach half a million people life-saving skills through free demonstrations and online guidance.
New research from St John Ambulance reveals significant knowledge gaps in the South East, where 27% of people do not recognize that choking can become life-threatening in minutes without first aid.
Survey results show 18% of residents wrongly believe using fingers clears a blockage, 10% suggest giving water, and 16% have never heard of the Heimlich Manoeuvre.
Community education partner Jordan Davison said choking is "often dismissed as a minor incident, but the consequences can be devastating," urging public engagement with the campaign.
Since re-launching in 2024, St John Ambulance has taught more than 800,000 people vital first aid, as 50% of the public agree communities would be safer with broader first aid knowledge.
