BMW has initiated a global recall of 3, 5, and 7 Series sedan models manufactured between 2014 and 2020 due to a fire risk caused by water ingress and corrosion in the starter motor. The problem stems from a weakness in the sealing gaskets; owners may experience symptoms such as difficulty starting the engine or a burning smell. BMW is replacing the starter motor free of charge to resolve the issue.
The German Automobile Inspection Agency (KBA) has discovered a technical defect in the starter relay of some BMW models in its latest assessment that could lead to water ingress and ultimately a fire.
