Recall Alert: Radioactive Shrimp Recall Expands; Affects Kroger, Other Brands

Nearly 92,000 bags of shrimp recalled due to cesium-137 contamination linked to Indonesian processing, with no illnesses reported, FDA said the risk is low.

  • Aquastar Corp recalled nearly 157,000 pounds of frozen shrimp sold at Kroger and Jay C stores across 31 states including Kentucky and Indiana between June 12 and September 17, 2025.
  • The recall follows concerns that the shrimp products may have been contaminated with cesium-137 , a radioactive isotope detected in shipping containers and frozen shrimp samples imported from Indonesia.
  • The recall covers several frozen shrimp products, including large raw shrimp with an easy-to-peel shell from Kroger, medium-sized cooked shrimp with tails removed sold under the Kroger Mercado brand, and raw shrimp skewers with tails attached produced by AquaStar, all of which have been distributed at various grocery stores in over 30 states.
  • FDA officials stated the detected Cs-137 level of about 68 becquerels per kilogram is far below the 1,200 becquerels per kilogram action level and called the health risk low, but warned of potential cancer risk from long-term exposure.
  • Consumers are advised to dispose of or return the affected shrimp products to retailers for a full refund, and the FDA has issued an import alert to block further shipments of contaminated shrimp from entering the United States.
