Montreal is hosting a final farewell for legendary jazz pianist Oliver Jones
Family members and the public paid final respects as the mayor signed a book of condolences and Jones’s ashes were displayed.
On Wednesday, Montreal honoured jazz legend Oliver Jones with a public viewing at city hall's Hall of Honour. Jones, who died in July at 91, was remembered by family and fans gathered to pay their respects.
Richard Jones, the musician's son, placed an urn containing his father's ashes near a portrait and flowers at the tribute. City flags were lowered to half-mast throughout Thursday to honour the artist who championed Montreal's jazz scene.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada signed a book of condolences, calling Jones 'a great Montrealer.' Jazz pianist Clarke Bouchard also attended, crediting the legend with mentoring him after they met when he was seven.
A public funeral service is scheduled for Thursday at Union United Church in Little Burgundy, the neighbourhood where Jones grew up. Representatives from municipal and provincial governments are expected to attend the ceremony.
"He is the very cornerstone of the jazz world of music," said jazz singer Ranee Lee, who performed with Jones for years. His career, marked by a hard-swinging style and technical precision, left a lasting mark on Canada's jazz community.
