Mom reunites with premature baby after lung transplant
Aimee Morrison survived pneumonia and cardiac arrest to receive a double lung transplant last July and reunited with her daughter born at 24 weeks, after nurses arranged a bedside visit.
- Aimee Morrison, 37, reunited with her premature daughter Jessica after a double lung transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital, she said `The nurses did my hair, helped me into a chair and I had my first cuddle with Jessica`.
- While being treated, doctors diagnosed pneumonia at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and discovered Aimee Morrison was three weeks pregnant; she was then resuscitated and transferred to Royal Papworth Hospital.
- Jessica, newborn daughter, was delivered prematurely at 29 weeks and five days, then moved to The Rosie Hospital for neonatal care, as Royal Papworth Hospital has no maternity ward, she said.
- Aimee Morrison returned home in September 2025 while Jessica was discharged in time for Christmas, after a lengthy recovery requiring high oxygen and a tracheostomy.
- Genetic testing identified a gene variant believed to have been triggered by pneumonia, linked to her rapid lung decline, involving multidisciplinary coordination among specialist interstitial lung disease, critical care, transplant, obstetrics, and neonatal teams.
