MoE approves setting up of five Centres of Excellence in classical languages
- On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Ministry of Education approved five Centres of Excellence for Classical Assamese, Bengali, Pali, Marathi, and Prakrit to strengthen academic research and preservation of linguistic heritage.
- These centres aim to strengthen academic research, digitization, preservation, and dissemination of heritage for these classical languages; approval was conveyed via an Office Memorandum from the Department of Higher Education on October 1.
- Five universities were selected: Tezpur University for Assamese, Visva-Bharati University for Bengali, Central University of Odisha for Pali, Central University of Gujarat for Prakrit, and Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute for Marathi.
- Tezpur University, which houses a Centre for Assamese Studies established in 2011, will host the Classical Assamese centre and leverage its prior digitization of around 4,000 rare manuscripts.
- Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the Central University of Odisha's selection for Classical Pali, saying the approval will "strengthen the study, preservation, and promotion of Pali" in India.
