Where Will Missouri Allow Drivers to Go 75 Mph? MoDOT Says the Answer Is Still Months Away
MoDOT will review traffic, crash history and road design before raising any rural interstate to 75 mph, with changes not automatic under the new law.
On Thursday, the Missouri Department announced it is evaluating where to implement 75 mph speed limits under a new state law taking effect Aug 28, cautioning that changes are not automatic.
State legislation permits maximum speeds up to 75 mph on eligible rural interstates and freeways, though it grants MoDOT final decision-making authority regarding specific road stretches.
Agency officials are analyzing crash history, terrain, road design, and traffic volumes, while also reviewing speed limits in neighboring states to determine where higher speeds can be safely implemented.
MoDOT Director Hassinger confirmed the $2.8 billion Improve I-70 Program between Wentzville and Blue Springs prevents increasing limits on that corridor until construction concludes.
By the end of the year, the department expects to conclude its review of eligible highway locations and provide an update on the path forward.
