Mizzou baseball earns Braggin' Rights with win over Illinois
Mizzou Tigers secured a 5-1 victory with a four-run first inning and eight shutout pitching innings, improving to 17-8 this season, officials said.
Missouri Baseball defeated Illinois 5-1 on Tuesday at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, securing the Braggin' Rights Rivalry victory. The Tigers tossed eight shutout innings to clinch the win.
Right-Hander Green struggled early, walking the first two batters he faced in his first career start. Coach Jackson intervened, telling Green, "Hey, pull yourself together," after which Green settled for two more scoreless innings.
Mizzou capitalized on a four-run first inning with RBI hits from Jase Woita and freshman Blaize Ward. Catcher Jamal George added a sixth-inning sacrifice fly to bring in Cameron Benson for the final run.
With the win, the Tigers improved their season record to 17-8. The roster features 10 players from the St. Louis area, many of whom previously played at CarShield Field during their youth.
Missouri will return to the field at 6 p.m. Wednesday in St. Charles to face in-state opponent Lindenwood. The team aims to build momentum following the mid-week Braggin' Rights victory.
