Mississippi School Accountability Grades Show Slight Decline

Mississippi schools and districts saw a decline in accountability grades with only 80.1% of schools and 87.2% of districts earning a C or higher, down from last year.

  • On Sep 25, 2025, the Mississippi Department of Education released 2024-25 results showing 80.1% of schools and 87.2% of districts earned a C or higher, down from 85.7% and 93.9% last year.
  • The accountability formula combines MAAP results, ELA and math proficiency and growth, science, ACT scores, advanced coursework, and graduation rates, MDE said.
  • Nine districts across the state earned D or F grades, up from three last year, and all but one of the seven existing charter schools received D or F ratings.
  • The Mississippi Department of Education plans to seek legislative funding for targeted programs and will update the accountability system for 2025-26, as Dr. Lance Evans said `Transforming districts that have struggled for years is complex work that does not happen overnight`.
  • In recent years, Mississippi has boasted major achievements including strong NAEP gains and national recognition for education progress over the past decade, but slipping scores ahead of the legislative session may boost school choice advocates despite the long-term progress narrative.
