Mississauga Resident Dead After Canoe Capsizes on Georgian Bay Township Lake: OPP
One person was rescued by a passing boater, while the second was found dead after the canoe overturned about 40 feet from shore.
On Saturday night, a 31-year-old Mississauga resident died after their canoe overturned on Stewart Lake in Georgian Bay Township shortly after 8 p.m., approximately 40 feet from shore.
Two people were in the canoe when it capsized; a passing boater rescued one occupant from the water, but the second individual went underwater and did not resurface.
Members of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, Muskoka Lakes Fire Department, and OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit conducted search efforts, locating the missing person on Sunday.
The Bracebridge Detachment is conducting an investigation in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a Sunday release, the OPP reminded boaters to prioritize water safety by wearing lifejackets and checking weather conditions; anyone with information is asked to contact the Bracebridge OPP or Crime Stoppers.
