Missing North Carolina Teen Found During Putnam County Traffic Stop; Man Arrested, Sheriff's Office Says

A 16-year-old missing from North Carolina was found during a traffic stop in Florida; driver Joshua Magraff was arrested with counterfeit money and drugs in his vehicle.

  • Late Sunday, Deputy Chewning stopped a speeding vehicle on U.S. Highway 17 near Crescent City and discovered a missing 16-year-old girl from North Carolina in the passenger seat.
  • Chewning initiated the stop after clocking the vehicle at a high rate of speed, and concern grew when the passenger gave multiple false names and birthdates, including a 2013 birth date making her 12 years old.
  • Deputies searched the vehicle and found 19 counterfeit $100 bills, synthetic marijuana, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Driver Joshua Magraff gave conflicting accounts, initially claiming the passenger was his cousin, later saying she was a friend and he thought she was 19.
  • Magraff was arrested on charges including interference in child custody and possession of counterfeit currency, booked into Putnam County Jail on a $9,000 bond. The teen was placed in protective custody pending reunification with her mother.
  • The teen's mother confirmed she reported her daughter missing on February 16 and told deputies she did not know Magraff. PCSO said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
