Minor girl rape and murder: Ex-Maharashtra home minister demands capital punishment for accused

- On Saturday, former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh demanded a death sentence for a 65-year-old suspect arrested for sexually assaulting and murdering a four-year-old girl in Pune district.
- Terming the incident "extremely outrageous," Deshmukh stated the crime in Bhor does not befit the state; police reports indicate the suspect allegedly lured the child with food before assaulting and killing her in a cattle enclosure.
- Deshmukh claimed the Devendra Fadnavis-led government is not serious about enforcing the stringent Shakti Act. "When there is an urgent need for this law in the state, the Centre and the state government are passing the buck," he said.
- The Shakti Bill, approved during the Maha Vikas Aghadi tenure, remains pending Central Government approval; Fadnavis noted the state legislature passed the bill in 2020, yet officials have failed to finalize implementation.
- Demanding a fast-track trial and immediate sentencing, Deshmukh claimed information suggests the suspect previously assaulted other children. If the law were in force, he said, the accused would have received execution within 15 days.
