Guadalupe Lopez No Longer Head of Minnesota's Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, DPS Says
DPS named Kim Babine interim leader as officials said they cannot comment on the reason for Lopez’s firing.
- On Wednesday, May 6, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety fired Guadalupe Lopez, director of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, one day after she led an annual Remembrance Ceremony.
- Appointed in July 2025, Lopez brought more than 25 years of advocacy experience, including four years leading Violence Free Minnesota, the statewide coalition to end relationship abuse.
- The Department of Public Safety confirmed Wednesday was Lopez's last day of employment but declined to provide reasons for the separation. Lopez told MPR News the state system lacked "cultural competency."
- Office of Justice Programs Executive Director Kim Babine will lead the MMIR Office on an interim basis, supported by Department of Public Safety Tribal Relations Director Juliet Rudie, a former office director.
- Lopez previously helped launch the first MMIR march in the Twin Cities Metro Area and worked with dozens of Native American nations. The office continues to serve the Indigenous community.
