Flags to Fly at Half Staff for WWII Soldier Being Laid to Rest
Identified remains of U.S. Army Capt. Willibald C. Bianchi are returning home for burial with full military honors after more than 80 years.
Army Capt. Willibald Charles Bianchi will be laid to rest with full military honors today, May 2, in the Soldiers Rest section of the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Bianchi, a prisoner of war, was killed on January 9, 1945, when U.S. aircraft attacked the Japanese transport ship Enoura Maru in Takao Harbor, unaware American prisoners were aboard.
A visitation gathering at the New Ulm National Guard Readiness Center runs from 10-11 a.m. today, followed by a military tribute speech ceremony at 11 a.m. before the procession.
Gov. Tim Walz ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in honor of Bianchi.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains last year through DNA analysis, honoring a soldier who earned the Medal of Honor for his valorous actions in the Philippines.
