Major Alcohol Pricing Change Comes Into Force Across Wales Today
The higher floor is expected to curb cheap, high-strength drinks, with experts saying it could prevent more than 900 alcohol-related deaths over 20 years.
On Thursday, The Welsh Government increased the Minimum Unit Pricing for alcohol in Wales from 50p to 65p, bringing the policy into effect today to reduce alcohol-related harm.
The previous 50p rate lost value due to inflation, dropping to 39p in 2020 prices; by raising the threshold to 65p, Wales now matches Scotland's minimum unit price.
Experts believe the move could prevent more than 900 alcohol-related deaths and help nearly 5,000 people reduce harmful drinking over the next 20 years.
Deputy Minister Nerys Evans stated, "Every one of the hundreds of lives this change could save is someone's parent, partner or child," emphasizing the increase targets harmful drinking.
Alcohol Change Director for Wales Andrew Misell welcomed the policy, noting it targets harmful drinks without raising pub prices; The Welsh Government invests more than £68 million supporting those affected by alcohol and drug use.
