'We Lost a Giant in Black Media': Journalist Everett Marshburn Dies at 78
Marshburn won five Emmy Awards and 14 National Association of Black Journalists honors while shaping Black Nouveau and mentoring younger reporters.
Milwaukee PBS producer Everett Marshburn died Monday, August 10, 2026, at age 78. A multi-award-winning journalist, Marshburn spent more than 50 years documenting Black stories and mentoring reporters across Wisconsin.
After 38 years at Maryland Public Television, Marshburn joined Milwaukee Public Television in 2006. He became the award-winning producer behind Black Nouveau, a public affairs program dedicated to revealing overlooked stories of Black Milwaukeeans.
Columnist James Causey recalled Marshburn's mentorship, noting he gifted Causey an 1846 copy of The Liberator days before his death. "His goal was to pass it on to the next person," Causey wrote.
Tributes arrived from Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who praised Marshburn's legacy, and Milwaukee PBS General Manager Debbie Hamlett, who noted his "thoughtfulness, warmth and generosity" to colleagues.
Marshburn was preparing to travel to Atlanta for the annual National Association of Black Journalists convention when he died. His decades mentoring young journalists of color through the NABJ ensures his influence on journalism persists.
