- Absent from the ceremony, Leigh sent a video message thanking the jury for the Golden Shell, noting that "Tender Loving Care" stands as his potential final feature due to a physical condition.
- During the opening ceremony, filmmaker Werner Herzog accepted a Donostia Award, as the festival hosted international stars including Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt in San Sebastian.
