U.S.-Iran Peace Deal Signed: Does Iran Come Out on Top?
The 14-point deal opens the Strait of Hormuz and starts 60 days of talks as oil prices fall, officials said.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, pausing hostilities between their two countries and entering a 60-day negotiation period.
Provisions include Iran allowing toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States ends naval blockades and develops plans to provide up to $300 billion for Iranian reconstruction.
Eric Fleury, a professor at Connecticut College, called the framework a 'positive step,' though he warned it grants Iran leverage to criticize U.S. troop levels or sanctions.
Ramin Ahmadi, an Iranian American, questioned the strategy, calling the deal a 'betrayal,' while oil markets reacted positively as the Strait of Hormuz reopened to traffic.
Negotiators have 60 days to draft a treaty that definitively concludes the conflict, with Mohammad Elahee of Quinnipiac University noting the deal offers Iran a chance to reintegrate globally.
