Not 1, Not 2, but 5 Students Jump Into Lifesaving Action as School Bus Driver Loses Consciousness
About 40 students acted fast, steering, braking and calling 911 after the driver blacked out from an asthma attack, preventing a crash.
- On Wednesday, middle school students in Mississippi prevented a potential tragedy after their bus driver, Leah Taylor, 46, lost consciousness following an asthma attack. The bus carried about 40 children along a highway.
- Sixth-Grader Jackson Casnave grabbed the steering wheel as the bus swerved, while fellow 6th grader Darrius Clark engaged the brakes. Simultaneously, 15-year-old Destiny Cornelius administered Taylor's asthma medication, helping the driver regain awareness.
- Eighth-Grader Kayleigh Clark called 911 while 13-year-old McKenzy Finch supported Taylor's head during the crisis. The Hancock County School District confirmed all students arrived home safely with no injuries.
- Recovering from the incident, Taylor expressed deep gratitude: "They're the ones that saved my life and everybody else's on that bus." School Principal Melissa Saucier said the students "didn't wait for somebody to step in, they stepped up themselves."
- Viral footage of the rescue drew significant online praise for the students' teamwork and composure. The group will be honored at a school pep rally, cementing their actions as an example of crisis resilience.
