Nadella Creates Microsoft Commercial CEO, Will Plan Future

Judson Althoff now oversees marketing and operations to support CEO Satya Nadella’s focus on strategic priorities, managing Microsoft’s commercial business revenue.

  • On Wednesday, Microsoft appointed Judson Althoff as CEO of its commercial business, CEO Satya Nadella announced in an internal memo.
  • To free up Nadella to focus on technical priorities, the reorganization will let him and engineering leaders concentrate on datacenter buildout, systems architecture, AI science, and product innovation.
  • Althoff will now oversee a broad commercial portfolio spanning product strategy, sales, services, support, marketing and operations across more than 120 subsidiaries generating $220 billion and more than 75% of revenue.
  • Marketing and operations will now report to Judson Althoff, Chief Marketing Officer Takeshi Numoto will report directly to him while still reporting to Satya Nadella on broader brand, and Nadella retains overall leadership with some commercial involvement.
  • The promotion follows a wider pattern at Microsoft of naming unit CEOs like Phil Spencer, Mustafa Suleyman and Ryan Roslansky, amid AI-driven reorganisations and recent Microsoft Marketplace changes.
