Guatemala deployed special forces, known as Kaibiles, to guard its northern border with Mexico just days after teams of cartel gunmen from Mexico entered the country and carried out violent attacks in rural border communities. In response to the incursion of members of a Mexican criminal gang into Huehuetenango, Guatemalan territory, the military authorities of both countries agreed to conduct “co-incident” operations on both sides of the border to oversee the activity in the region, according to Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla.
