Mets to Call up RHP Tong, Option Viral Reliever Yan
Jonah Tong earned a return after fixing mechanics at Triple-A Syracuse, where he posted a 3.00 ERA in his last 10 starts, the Mets said.
- On Monday, the New York Mets recalled 23-year-old pitcher Jonah Tong to the major leagues, keeping him in their rotation for the season's final weeks. Tong will start against the Marlins in Miami as he auditions for a permanent 2027 rotation spot.
- After struggling during his 2025 debut with a 7.71 ERA in five starts, Tong refined his mechanics at Triple-A Syracuse this season. He emphasized his signature Vulcan-grip changeup to correct issues that contributed to the Mets missing the playoffs by one game.
- Since July 18, Tong has posted a 2.20 ERA with 44 strikeouts over eight starts, demonstrating improved command. Interim manager Andy Green confirmed the pitcher will receive regular rotation opportunities throughout the remainder of the season.
- To accommodate the move, the Mets optioned reliever Jefry Yan to Triple-A Syracuse after the trade deadline departures of Brooks Raley and Luke Weaver. Yan struck out 17 in 12 2/3 innings during his brief stint.
- Tong joins a young rotation projected to include Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Zac Thornton in 2027. "I'm the same kid I was last year," Tong said, citing a "boatload of experience" gained during his development.
