Meta’s Zuckerberg Weighs in on AI Safety; Favours Evaluators over Slowdown
Zuckerberg said AI labs should use independent evaluators and advisers, while Meta delayed its Muse tool for months to focus on safety and security.
On Tuesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg advocated for independent evaluators in AI development, stating "engaging independent evaluators and advisors is industry best practice."
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's 3,800-word essay accelerated the AI safety debate over the weekend, prompting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk to endorse calls for coordinated development safeguards.
During Salesforce Dreamforce, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dismissed new AI regulations as "just completely unnecessary," arguing market forces and existing laws suffice and there is no "false choice about AI development being either safe or fast."
Altman stated AI companies should remain capable of safely improving models independently while expressing disappointment with how competitive pressure framing has been characterized in the debate.
Trust and alignment are becoming the most important competitive capabilities, Zuckerberg added, warning labs failing to "focus on alignment will fall behind" as Meta delayed its Muse model without waiting for industry-wide consensus.
