Meta’s Muse AI Agent Is Building a Dossier On You
Meta's Muse, a personal AI agent, creates and updates "a page for every person in the user's life" through an hourly background process. The system compiles data from messages, photos, and memory to track relationships.
Researchers, including independent AI safety expert Karan Joshi, extracted Muse's system prompts through the app's chat interface. The Future Society separately published system instructions from an exported Muse virtual machine, revealing how the agent operates.
Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts stated Muse compiles relationship context "based on public information and from what you've chosen to share." The company maintains this data gathering is vital for the agent to function and help users achieve goals.
Privacy concerns have prompted Amazon to block Muse from its site in September, citing lack of prior notification. Apple also recently changed how it handles "Full Disk Access" permissions for AI agents, addressing cybersecurity risks.
Despite the scrutiny, Muse amassed more than 5 million downloads in just 3 weeks, dominating app store charts. Independent AI safety expert Karan Joshi described the agent's attempt to know users "like a friend" as "honestly pretty creepy.
Good morning! Meta's new service Muse has become a million-dollar success - and at the same time collects information about family, friends and colleagues. Also: the Pope on AI art and China's encroachment on the US.
