Mom’s Metallic Taste in Mouth Was Sign of Terminal Cancer
Doctors found her kidneys were working at just 5% after the unusual symptom, and she now has dialysis three times a week.
June Kelly, 48, of Micklefield, Leeds, received a diagnosis of incurable myeloma in March 2021 after doctors at York Hospital discovered her kidney function had dropped to 5% following a persistent metallic taste in her mouth.
Following her diagnosis, Kelly underwent four months of weekly chemotherapy injections, then received a stem cell transplant last September at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham before returning home to continue maintenance chemotherapy in tablet form.
Because she cannot receive a kidney transplant, Kelly undergoes dialysis three times a week, yet remains determined to explore the UK in a campervan with her husband, Adrian.
Kelly, who previously competed in triathlons, now focuses on family milestones, stating, "I enjoy the good days and just get through the bad," while aiming to see her daughter graduate next year.
Sharing her story during Myeloma Awareness Week, Kelly backs a Myeloma UK campaign for early detection; Chief Executive Dr. Sophie Castell urges people to "get your symptoms checked" immediately.
