Meta says AI glasses fix stops users from secretly recording others

Meta said the change will stop recording if the glasses’ indicator light is covered, after reports of users filming people without consent.

  • On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Meta announced privacy updates for its artificial intelligence-powered glasses, now disabling cameras if the recording-indicator LED is covered during use.
  • CBS News senior crime and public safety coordinating producer Anna Schecter tested the glasses last month and found the previous mechanism failed to stop recording when she covered the light after filming began.
  • Alex Himel, vice president of wearables at Meta, stated in a post last week that the company will continue rolling out updates to ensure the LED reliably alerts bystanders when capture occurs.
  • Meta noted in an email to CBS News that the camera deactivation has created a deterrent effect, forcing companies offering LED tampering services to shut down operations.
  • Beyond hardware adjustments, the company is removing online instructions for tampering and blocking hashtags related to harassing "pickup artist" and "rizz" content to address privacy concerns.
