Mesa to sue over fire truck prices
The city says the companies’ consolidation cut supply and pushed wait times to as long as 4.5 years, according to firefighters’ testimony.
Mesa council last week authorized legal action against fire truck manufacturers REV Group, LLC and Oshkosh Corporation, accusing them of colluding to drive up prices and extend delivery times.
City Attorney Jim Smith noted that over 40 cities have sued the two manufacturers, alleging market consolidation allowed them to cut supply, raise prices, and restrict competitive options.
Wait times have quadrupled to 4.5 years in some areas, IAFF General President Edward Kelly testified, while exorbitant price increases force departments to cancel training and keep aging vehicles in service.
Coincidentally, Mesa is moving forward with a $1.7 million purchase of an E-One Cyclone utility truck, while the city attorney's office retained outside counsel with no upfront cost to taxpayers.
Manufacturers including Pierce Manufacturing attribute rising costs to inflation and customization requirements, while also citing new safety regulations imposed by federal agencies as factors contributing to delivery delays.
