Meningitis outbreak: Number of cases falls for first time
The total meningitis cases have dropped from 34 to 29 after reclassification and vaccination; over 8,000 vaccines and 12,000 antibiotics were administered, UKHSA said.
- On Saturday the UK Health Security Agency said meningitis cases in the Kent outbreak fell to 29 from 34, including two deaths: a 21-year-old University of Kent student and a sixth-form pupil at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Faversham.
- Contact tracing shows the cluster, traced to Club Chemistry, Canterbury , involved many cases from March 5 to March 15 and prompted one of Kent's largest recent public-health responses.
- Health services have mobilised thousands of doses, rolling out over 8,000 vaccines and administering more than 8,500 antibiotic courses, while vaccine hubs faced capacity issues and one responder said, 'I had the antibiotics already. We already knew it was going to be busy'.
- UKHSA data show 20 cases are laboratory confirmed, nine remain under investigation, and some initially confirmed cases have been reclassified with further downgrades expected.
